All Too Human

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

The scandals seem to never end. Our appetite for sensational gossip news is as embarrassing as the acts themselves. One may receive fifteen minutes of fame but scandal gets you sixty minutes. The only people to pray for really bad news are those caught in the news cycle needing a worse story to upstage their own. Every profession from sports to clergy suffers from scandalous actions. Entertainers who fall prey to such issues never surprise me but others often catch me off guard.

Move over Mr. Rogers!

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Like us, most publishers have mothballed their flocking machine (a press designed to adhere glue and yellow fuzz to paper to create flannelgraph) and moved on to other means of communicating the gospel. I realize some of you miss the hours of cutting those paper figures out and putting them in sequential order for the lesson. From flocking to film and from cardigans to DVDs, people of every age take in information differently from the way we did even a decade ago.

How will my kids do?

Friday, July 10th, 2009

If my Father wants them in His house who am I to say, “Do you know who you are associating with?” I believe our heavenly Father expects us to get along with fellow believers. If we are going to share heaven with people who are very different from us, how then can we not want to play well together?

Report of decline – what to do

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Ed Stetzer is an unassuming individual who deeply cares about the body of Christ and specifically about the local church and poured his entire career into helping them grow. He has posted a most insightful blog post about the recent annual church profile of the Southern Baptist Denomination. This post entitled “denomination in decline” is worthy of your time to read and while it reflects Southern Baptist data, there are lessons to be learned by churches with other labels.

Oops, I missed one

Friday, April 17th, 2009

You can hide eggs in really cool places in the house, like under the recliner, between the seat cushions on the couch, and inside flower vases. Finding them indoors took a lot longer because of the tricky hiding spots. I loved hiding them indoors. About the Friday after Easter we often began noticing a distinct odor in the living room. [More...] We quickly determined that I had missed finding one of those eggs. It is amazing the stink that can come from one small elusive colored “fowl egg.”

What is critical in local church ministry?

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Lifeway research shows – “Congregations with fewer than 100 in worship attendance are significantly more likely to list evangelism/outreach as an important ministry (72 percent) than churches with 250 or more in attendance (60 percent). On the other hand, midsize churches (worship attendance between 100 and 249) are significantly more likely to list children’s or youth ministry as critical (90 percent) than churches that are smaller (83 percent) or larger (81 percent).”

Treat your family to a summer break

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

ring something fresh, relevant and relational for families in the summer while dealing with possible lower numbers in attendance and available workers. Teaching Sunday School with all members of the family together in one setting, where moms and dads get to experience learning and discussions with their sons and daughters.

Family members will be taught together and given materials to discuss along with activities to reinforce the lessons at home. Each person will have an age-appropriate devotional magazine that further teaches the weekly theme giving practical implementation ideas. The end result is that we have taken church into the home more powerfully and intentionally, which will strengthen the development of prayer, principles, and relationships.

These may sound a little corny until you get the family out there doing one of these. Here are some more websites to get your mind thinking about what is right for your family this Thanksgiving.
