Why do authors get rejection letters from publishers?

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Seeing “no” in a rejection letter never feels great but understanding the reasons may help. Publishers say no for a number of reasons. Some of these may have nothing to do with the material submitted. Let’s review the possible answers you may get from most any publisher.

Developing writers

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

For those of you attending the National Association of Free Will Baptists, I am putting together just such a workshop. I have invited in some of our best writers with a variety of publishing expertise. Each author has an assigned topic and together they will give you 90 minutes of valuable insight. Below are the topics they will unpack and how the session will look.

Report of decline – what to do

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Ed Stetzer is an unassuming individual who deeply cares about the body of Christ and specifically about the local church and poured his entire career into helping them grow. He has posted a most insightful blog post about the recent annual church profile of the Southern Baptist Denomination. This post entitled “denomination in decline” is worthy of your time to read and while it reflects Southern Baptist data, there are lessons to be learned by churches with other labels.

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

If you do not like conflict, you should consider the benefits that it offers your organization or relationships. Break open almost any Lencioni title, but this one will get you on track quickly. Dysfunction should not be a desired descriptor of your leadership or your team. (This is a review of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team)

ReThink Your Life

Friday, November 21st, 2008

We look in the mirror each day before going outside to ensure that our colors match, our hair is in place or appropriately out of place, and our general appearance is presentable. We also look at our proportions and wish for some pounds to be removed preferably on their own without our help. Rarely have I met people who, when blatantly honest, would not like to change one or more characteristics about their physical body.

When thinking about improving ourselves, changing the physical body seems to garner all of our mental energy. Have we given consideration to putting our mind on a diet?

Leadership Without Easy Answers

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Heifetz, professor at John F. Kennedy School of Government, did not have to quote some book or popular case studies to validate his principles. He reached back into history and brought the context of major points where leaders make significant impacts in history and shows us behind the scenes insights we do not read in history. This type of information helps us understand leadership, influence, and policy formation in a whole new light.

The Role of Publishers and Authors

Friday, September 19th, 2008

The manuscript alone is not enough and most publishers do not want completed manuscripts. The publisher can help shape the style and length of what a certain book should be for the marketplace. An author should not ignore the expertise of the publisher by being too attached and unwilling to make changes to the proposed book.

West Point Way of Leadership

Friday, July 4th, 2008

You do not have to be in the army to appreciate the way Lt. Col. Donnithorne writes his leadership guide. No one can argue the fact that some of the best leaders have come through West Point. Lee, Grant, MacAuthur, Eisenhower, Patton, and Schwarzkopf are certainly great military leaders and two of these went on [...]

Toy Box Leadership – book review

Friday, May 30th, 2008

The secret to great leadership is child’s play. While many books feature the latest leadership trends and theories, Toy Box Leadership – Leadership Lessons From the Toys You Loved as a Child, shows that the most important lessons are learned as kids through the simplest of sources – toys. This is a fun fresh read [...]
